Speech writing is an art of conveying a message to your audience. Either through oral communication or through other means, such as power point slides. Writing a speech is very similar to writing an essay, a report, a letter or any type of writing. You want to share information or idea. But the one difference is that your words are being heard not read. The audience is the listener not a reader. So, you only have one chance to get your message across.

As you write or draft your speech, you need to remember that you are talking. So, your sentences need to be shorter and have more casual, informal, ordinary words. See the Best Selling Essays on Amazon.

Parts of Speech Writing

A simple speech has 3 parts. They are:

  1. Introduction: State what you are going to tell your audience.
  2. Body: Deliver the speech you promised your audience.
  3. Ending: Summarize and restate what you have told your audience.

Speech Writing Format

  1. HEADING: The heading comprises of:
  • Speech Topic: This is the topic of your speech.
  • Speaker: Your name goes here.
  • Speech Purpose: The specific purpose statement of your speech goes here.
  • Venue: The venue of the event.
  • Date: The date of your speech goes here.

These items listed are compressed in a sentence in the speech heading. For example, let see the heading of a welcome address by the principal at the valedictory service/Prize-giving ceremony.

A WELCOME ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE PRINCIPAL; MISS EUNICE OGBOGU AT THE VALEDICTORY SERVICE/PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY OF BETHEL HOME CONVENT, G.R.A. ENUGU ON 16TH JULY, 2019.

Looking at this heading, we can see that it contains: the speech topic, the speaker’s name, speech purpose, the venue and date.

  1. INTRODUCTION: This comprises of salutations/ recognitions of the dignitary and the introductory paragraph. In most cases, the salutations and the recognitions are aligned on the left side of the paper the way the receiver’s address is written. Some other speech writers begin their salutations as a paragraph.

The introductory paragraph is where the crux of the matter begins. Here, the speech writer is expected to capture briefly what he or she has set to do. That is, you should tell them what you are going to tell them.

  1. BODY: This is where you deliver the speech in details. Explanations, descriptions, expositions are done on the speech body. These are done using, short sentences and informal words in most cases.
  2. ENDING: There is no rule regarding how a speech should be concluded as long as it does not contradict what you have told the people. You can end by telling the listeners what you have told them. That is, restating your message. Speech should never end abruptly so your audience will not feel disappointed. It should not also end on a dull note. Make the end of your speech leave your audience yearning for more.

  • Example #1:  FAREWELL SPEECH FOR MY PRINCIPAL ON RETIREMENT

A FAREWELL SPEECH PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR PREFECT; NJIDE MKPARU ON THE OCCASION OF A SEND-OFF PARTY IN HONOUR OF MY PRINCIPAL ON RETIREMENT IN ODUMA FEDERAL COLLEGE, ENUGU ON 16TH JULY, 2019.

A very good morning to the respected Principal Sir,

Our wonderfulTeachers,

Our dear parents,

The dignitaries/ invited guests and

My fellow students.

At this occasion of send-off party held in the honour of our dear Principal, Mr. Timothy John, I would like to deliver a farewell speech for his honour.

Dear fellow students, to be frank, this is a sad moment for us that we are doing the send off party today of our best Principal. However, we should not be sad and give him a nice farewell happily. He would be our best Principal forever and would be in our memory as well.

Today he is the guest of honour at his send-off party. I know that all of us today are very sad as we are missing our best Principal of the college. But I am the lucky one, the one given the great privilege of expressing my views to him here in front of you all.

He was our most dedicated Principal who always taught us to follow discipline and etiquette. He has contributed a lot to our college in the field of education and other recreational works. He made very interesting and easy all the events celebrations in the college through his dedicated support and creative mind. I still remember my first day in this college in junior class. I was fed up because, everything sounded strange. I faced many challenges and distractions as a new comer. I always fall prey into the traps of the seniors. I was also sluggish in the school activities. Other new comers who came into the school the same time with me adapted easily to the school system. But I saw myself lagging behind.

The Principal took the burden upon himself. He developed confidence within me. He taught me to be happy and confident. Really, I can never forget that moment with him.

We also enjoyed the well planned tours and excursions. The highest was the tour to Zuma rock with him last year.

I can never forget to mention here that Mr. Timothy is the best Principal in the history of Oduma federal college. He is also my excellent Physics teacher. He did not wile away time in his office as many other Principals do. He taught us in the classrooms too. He made Physics which is boring and difficult subject really very easy and interesting. He has changed our mindset towards study by telling us ways for effective learning. He is like a father figure for us; he behaved to us like a friend when we need a friend, like an educationist during study time however behaved strictly when we were wrong.

He is very passionate person and always willing to learn new things in his life. He asked daily about our well-being, took care of us. Really, we have been blessed with such a great Principal like him in this school. Really, he will be missed a lot by all of us here. Thank you sir for giving us such wonderful years which will forever remain stored in our hearts forever. For your sacrifices and relentless efforts in this school, God will reward you immensely. We wish you a happy retirement.

Thank you.

  •       Example #2:  SPEECH IN THE HONOUR OF OUR HOUSE MASTER ON PROMOTION

A FAREWELL SPEECH PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR PREFECCT ON THE OCCASION OF A SEND-OFF PARTY IN THE HONOUR OF OUR HOUSE MASTER ON PROMOTION, IN ODUMA FEDERAL COLLEGE, ANAMBRA ON 3RD MAY, 2016.

A very good morning to the respected Principal Sir,

Teachers,

The great house master,

Our dear parents,

The dignitaries/ invited guests and

My fellow students.

Welcome, everyone. My name is Njide and I am in Senior Secondary three. We are gathered here today at this special occasion of send-off party organized for our house master on his promotion. On behalf of my fellow students and the unbeatable blue house, I am here on the stage to say something about our house master who has got promoted to head our mother Institution, Brain-child academy. I am here to express our feelings to him in the time he has spent with us in this school and congratulate him on his promotion.

It is a very sorrowful condition for all of us here that he is leaving us, especially the blue house which it affects directly. However, it is also the time to cheer his promotion. It is really hard and painful inside to bid him goodbye after labouring tirelessly in this school with other teachers for a nice long ten years. However, we can do nothing less other than celebrating with him for since he is leaving for good.

Master P. as we fondly call him would be missed greatly by everyone in the school. How the enjoyable moment was with him, I never forget. Our house master has capability to distinguish himself very wisely in the crowd with his diligence humour drive at school. He has been honoured with many awards and achievements in this school for his hard works, dedication and increased trophies won for our house and the school. We all will agree that the unbeatable tag on the blue house is not a mere title. Before I joined the schools and the blue house six years ago, it was in the history that the blue house has never been beaten in any competition. Till date, the trend has continued. We will still agree that blue house is always the group that represents our school in the external sports competition. We all went, saw and conquered. Thanks to our Master P.

His great achievements have inspired us a lot and would be continued in the future with us. I wish that my house master may continue achieving nice results and success in his new school which he is going to join tomorrow. Of course, he is the boss of us, not by post but by his work, way of dealing to us and success. He has nice coaching and guidance skills, good sense of humour and trustworthiness. I experienced a lot in this school learning under his tutor.

However, I am a little bit sad for I do not know how we are going to adapt for whoever will be our next house master. It is likely a fearful condition for us to leave our best house master and learn under a new house master.

Our house master had given us a happy learning environment and a cheerful team with easily. The school he is going to join is very big and one of the country’s best. The school is well structured with two Principal administrators. He is promoted as the general coordinator of the school. I am not afraid for my house master capability. The excellent performances which have been recorded through him in this school leave us no doubt that he will move for bigger and brighter career in his new school. He is going so far from us. However, he is leaving us with his many good remembrance, amazing ideas and strategies to move ahead.

Thank you Master for all your supports, friendship, and help. Please, forgive us for all the mistakes which we have made unknowingly. I wish you a very good luck in the new office. I wish you all the best and success for your new visions. I hope and wish you will keep in touch with us.

Thank you.

  • Example #3: WRITE A SPEECH YOU WILL DELIVER ON YOUR GRADUATION ON THE CHALLENGES OF PREFECT SHIP

A SPEECH ON THE CHALLENGES OF PREFECTSHIP DELIVERED BY THE GAMES PREFECT  ON THE OCCASION OF PRIZE-GIVING/GRADUATION CEREMONY OF ODUMA MISSION COLLEGE, EDO ON 30TH MAY, 2019.

A very good morning to the respected Proprietor Sir,

The Principal,

Teachers,

Our dear parents,

The dignitaries/ invited guests and

My fellow students.

Welcome, everyone. My name is Njide. Today is our graduation party and it is the last day of us in the school. I would like to speech on the challenges of prefect ship on behalf of my class. We can never forget all the supports and care given to us by our respected teachers and fellow students. We will always remember all the etiquette taught by our teachers.

We joined the school many years back however it seems that it was yesterday and the time of departure has come very soon. The education environment of this school is very strict, cool and motivational. We liked it very much. We got many experiences together with the good education. For our successors and those coming up to take the mantle of prefect ship, I would like to share some of our experiences with you on the challenges of prefect-ship.

The classroom is a noisy place. When the teachers are not there, the students have the tendency to indulge in all manner of mischief.  Students play pranks among themselves and these pranks more often turn into fight. To keep the class under discipline, a prefect is appointed by the teacher or most time voted by the students.  A prefect becomes an understudy of the teacher only that he doesn’t teach.

A prefect must be a person of character, does not take sides, must be assertive and stand by his word. He can help the teachers and the school in many ways. He or she can bring teaching materials like maps, globes, charts and books to the class. He can collect and distribute notebooks, library hooks and exercise books.

The post of prefect ship is the one with enormous challenges. A prefect, whether senior, library, study, chapel, disciplinarian, sanitary, games, etc, should possess every leadership qualities. He or she is looked upon to be responsible. All eyes are on him/her. He or she has become a mirror to the school.

Prefect ship demands total obedient to the school’s rules and regulations. You are the custodians of laws. You call for equity; you should also come with clean hands. A sanitary Prefect should never look unkempt and a study prefect should never fail in his or her examinations.  You are expected to live up to your expectations.

This position also makes you become the second teacher. You are answerable to every action of the students. I still remember that year when a student drank a poisonous substance at night. It was a horrible night for me and my classmates. While other students were asked to go to bed, we were summoned for an interrogation. It is also important to mention that no issue can be resolved in the school without involving a prefect or prefects. You are like the eyes to the school.

I would like to say thank you to the teachers for everything and all the senior and junior students for your love and cooperation. We were able to sail this boat of prefect ship because you cooperated with us. I plead with you to do same to our successors. I also would like to say sorry on our behalf for all the bad behaviours. I wish you all the best. To all of my juniors and seniors; and all my dear friends, I say goodbye.

Thank you all.

  • Example #4: Your school is organizing her first Inter-readers’ Club. Write a speech on the topic; “Computer as a friend” which you will deliver on the event.

SPEECH ON COMPUTER AS A FRIEND DELIVERED BY NAOMI EKWEANI AT THE INTER-READERS’ CLUB EVENT HELD AT BETHEL HOME CONVENT G.R.A. ENUGU ON 4TH MAY 2018.

Proprietors/Proprietresses,

The Principals,

Dear guests and

My fellow students.

Good evening to you all and thank you for coming to this Inter-Readers’ club event by accepting our invitation. I am here to speech on the topic, ‘computer as your friend’.

The growing influence of computers has made many people not to feel at ease. They fear the way these machines are creeping into businesses, homes and even such familiar places as libraries and stores. Despite their forbidding aspects, computers have a great deal going for them. Each of us must set aside our misconceptions and prejudices and see computers for fantastic resources they are.

Computers, if you are not afraid of them can be marvelous companions. First of all, they are an endless source of stimulation and fun. They can tease you, play games with you and stretch your creative prowess. Also, it is in contrast to Television which does not interact with viewers. Computers force users to keep their mind alert. In addition, computers can help you with your works, uncomplainingly. A computer will plan your budget, reorganize a report or draw graph. It will do its best to make you look good.

Computers provide users with a sense of achievement. The day you finally understand computer techniques, the joy you feel is as the same the day you first learned how to ride a bicycle or how to swim. You will also realize that computers rule the world but you rule the computers because it is yours to direct.

Finally, computers provide a chance to prepare for the future. Like it or not, these devices are here to stay. In few years to come, the ability to use computers may be a standard requirement for secondary schools and university graduates. Ignorant of computer applications will hinder an individual in all phases of his or her life. These people who established early friendship with computers will enjoy a head start in the race towards the computer age.

Computers can be a treasure chest of wonders if only we are not afraid to look inside. They can also be powerful friends. It is time to put aside our distrust and fear, and welcome computers into our lives as wonderful companions.

Thank you for listening.

  • Example #5: Your valedictory service and graduation is around the corner, write a farewell speech which you will deliver on the graduation and send-off party.

A FAREWELL SPEECH DELIVERED BY THE DISCIPLINARY PREFECCT  ON THE OCCASION OF VALEDICTORY SERVICE, GRADUATION AND SEND-OFF CEREMONY OF BOYS HIGH SCHOOL OSUMENYI ON 30TH MAY, 2019.

A very good morning to the respected Principal Sir,

 Teachers,

Our dear parents,

 The dignitaries/ invited guests and

My fellow students.

The moment has come when I am standing in front of you all to deliver my speech on my last day in school as a student in Boys High School, Osumenyi. While I was preparing myself for this day, I had been planning a lot of imaginary speeches about my experience, my learning, my relationship with my teachers and fellow students, the time spent in the classrooms, library, clubs, preps, etc. But now, when the actual moment has arrived, I cannot think of anything else except these two words, ‘Thank You!’

Thank you for enriching my last six years here at BO.HI.SC.O. I would like to thank all of you especially our Principal.

Our teachers have been wonderful. When we made stupid mistakes, they corrected us and motivated us like a friend. Most especially Master P, our house master, it has been a great moment with him. How the enjoyable moment was with him, I never forget. Our house master has capability to distinguish himself very wisely in the crowd with his diligence humour drive at school. His great achievements have inspired us a lot and would continue to drive us in the future in the pursuit of our careers.  I say, thank you again for everything.

Apart from the enriching experiences we had in our school days and excellent academic works, Boys High School, Osumenyi has given me some real assets in the form of my friends both in junior and the senior classes who always gave me tough competition and an inspiration to succeed. On a lighter note, I always worked harder because of them. I also want to say thank you.

Last and not the least, I would sincerely like to thank the canteen and the kitchen matrons for serving me with home-made food, snacks and beverages. I am certainly going to miss the days spent here and going to utilize what I have learnt here in my future endeavours.

Once again, I say, thank you all!
