A woman has taken to the internet yesterday, showing the world the beads she retrieved from the waist of her 12 years old niece who has been living in her house for the past 6 months. She was shocked by how the girl was able to hide the waist beads from her view for the past months.

She was also surprised how her parents were not able to see the waist beads from their daughter’s waist. The girl confessed that she has won the bead for years.

She calls on all parents to be careful with their children especially where it concerns young girls. She said she has retrieved the beads from her niece and burn them. She is asking whether she was harsh in her decision by burning the waist beads.

Meanwhile, waist beads are parts of women’s dressing in some Nigerian culture. In other cultures, people see those who put them on as being wayward or irresponsible. I have once used waist bead to checkmate my weight but my big aunt saw it, she accused me of joining the Ogbanje (Mermaid) group. When she reported to my mother, my mother misunderstood it to be the sign of being a runs girl. That was how I gave up on waist beads.

The case here is understandable. The said girl is too young to put on waist bead. Secondary, where they come from, the culture does not support waist beads.
