STUDY 11

4TH SUNDAY IN LENT/ MOTHERING SUNDAY MARCH 10 2024

SUB-THEME: The Broad Way-1

TOPIC: The Deceitful way

TEXT:. Gen. 3:1-8

AIM: To help participants understand what the Broadway is all about

and how deceitful it is.

INTRODUCTION: We greet all our mothers today, as they celebrate the Mothering Sunday. We wish them blissful years ahead in Jesus name. Grammatically, Broadway simply means “a large open or main road.” In our text today, we read of how Eve was smoothly deceived and lured into disobeying God. The Lord Jesus used the term, ‘broad’ to refer to a kind of Christianity where everything goes freely and smoothly with little or no caution to such way of life. This study will help us understand the broad-way not just as dangerous but also deceitful.

STUDY GUIDES

What do you understand by “the deceitful way” in the context of our
study today? Compare with Prov. 26:24-26
From the words of Christ”… for wide is the gate and broad is the way
that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it” in
7:13; identify the “Broadway elements” from the discussion
between the serpent and the woman in Genesis 3:1-8.
Discuss how the devil deceives Christians today through the
“Broadway” concept. 2Cor. 11:13-15. What is the way out?
In the context of 2Tim 4:1 -3, discuss the need for genuine discipleship
in our Churches today as a remedy for the devil’s “sweet” deceits.

CONCLUSION: The devil indeed is subtle, as recorded in the Scriptures. He knows that the way to achieve his purpose is to portray evil as good. Therefore, we must not be ignorant of the devices of this dangerous being that deceitfully appears as an “angel of light”.

TOPIC: The Easy Way

TEXT: Rom 7:14-25

AIMS:

to explain the Lord’s assertion of the Broadway as an easy way and
to inform Christians of the danger on the easy way-

INTRODUCTION: We are in a generation that wants everything fast and easy – including their spiritual walk with God. In our Bible passage today, Apostle Paul illuminates us to the fact that he cannot do the good he intends doing, because sin sometimes overrides him in doing evil. This is telling us that the way to sinfulness is very easy; therefore, those who always want to tread the “easy way” are not ready for genuine Christianity.

CONCLUSION: Have you observed that most of the foods called “junks” are those appetizing and easy to make? The same applies to the Christian life. Believers must beware of the kind of Christianity that costs them nothing. If we must be like Christ, we must be self-disciplined, take up our cross and follow Him.

THEME: The Christian Race

SUB-THEME: Passion Sunday
TOPIC: The kingship of Jesus

TEXT: Luke 19:28-40

AIMS:

to study the essence of proclaiming Jesus as king on earth and to discuss the repercussion of denying the kingship of Christ.

INTRODUCTION: The word Passion is from the Latin word patior, which also means, “to suffer, bear and endure”. Literarily, the Passion Week means the week of Christ’s fulfillment of His earthly mission. The week started with the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, and ended with the crucifixion at Calvary. In this year’s Passion Sunday, we are studying the kingship of Jesus. Despite riding on a colt, a symbol of humility, He was widely acknowledged as the expected King and Messiah on His journey to Jerusalem. He took over the charge of the temple by purifying it from profane habits. However, the attempts of the Pharisees to silence the crowd in the street and to stop Christ from the Temple cleansing were futile.

CONCLUSION: Despite His lowly ride, the Pharisees still attempted to silence the crowd from acknowledging the kingship of Christ. As Christians, we may meet such oppositions on our earthly race while proclaiming the gospel; nevertheless, we should never stop nor be ashamed because no one can stop the Kingship of Jesus.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: When Christ rules the heart, the mouth proclaims Him as King of kings.

TOPIC: New life in Christ Jesus

TEXT: 2 Cor 5:12-21

AIMS:

to study the concept of new life in Christ and
to discuss the old livelihood in relation to the new life in Christ.

INTRODUCTION: We thank God for another Easter morning, a day to celebrate the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over death. In our Bible passage today, Paul exposed the fact that Christ died as an innocent person for the sins He never committed, just for our righteousness and salvation (2 Cor 5:15, 21). He admonished us that the best way to acknowledge this maximum sacrifice of Christ is to continuously live like Him and in Him (2Cor5:15-17.

CONCLUSION: As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ today, let us continuously put to death every works of the flesh and daily put on the new man in Christ so as to reign with Him eternally.

TOPIC: The Way of Compromise

TEXT: 1 Kings 11: 1 – 11

AIM:

to study how compromise leads to the broad way of destruction and
to identify some compromising attitude in the scriptures and theirconsequences.

INTRODUCTION: As seen in our earlier studies, the broad-way Christianity is the kind where everything goes; everything is accommodated – that is: holy and sinful, legitimate and illegitimate, right and wrong. It is characterized by compromise. Compromise simply means “living by standards that are lower than the desirable,” or “double standard.” In our Bible Passage today, we see King Solomon, giving up the worship of the Most High God to the worship of foreign idols because of the love for strange women. Let us go into our discussions to understand more of this topic.

What do you understand by “compromise” in the context of our

CONCLUSION: The Bible warns us in 2Cor 6:14 that we must “not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness” 2Cor 6:14. Therefore, as Christians, we are not expected to live double standard lives. We should be firm in our Faith in Christ Jesus throughout our Christian race on earth.

TOPIC: The Way of Destruction

TEXT: 2 Sam 15:1-14; 18:9-17

AIMS:

to identify activities that are actually destructive to our Christian

livelihood and ii. to discuss how we can avoid the way of such activities.

INTRODUCTION: Every sinful and ungodly way ends in destruction. People who tread on that way may be enjoying it temporarily; but such “enjoyment” does not last. In our Bible reading today, Absalom plotted against his own father, the anointed king of Israel. Initially, the road seemed good and smooth, but it ended in his destruction. (2Sam 18:9-17). Our study guides will reveal how we can avoid this type of broad way of destruction.

STUDY GUIDES

With reference to our Bible passage today, define the broad-way as the way of destruction and the end of the road for Absalom in 2Sam 17:9-17.

CONCLUSION: In a world where sin is rampant and made to look harmless and attractive, believers in Christ are to be careful of things they engage with. They must not just consider the immediate pleasures, but the ultimate end.

TOPIC: The Path of Truth

TEXT: Luke 19:2-10

AIMS:

;. to discuss the narrow way in the context of a sincere heart of repentance,

to torch-light the attributes of a truthful Christian and
to encourage believers to stay on the path of truth.

INTRODUCTION: Our study text today opens our eyes to the attitude of a truthful person. Zacchaeus did not hide his past sinful life; instead, he confessed them and resolved to change to the path of truth. Not only did Zacchaeus see the error of his ways, but also he had a total change of heart. He no longer wanted to live a dishonest life, because he came to know and believe in Jesus. In the narrow path, the believer does not live the way he wants. It is the way of truth. Our study guides will reveal to us how we can stay on this path in our Christian race to God’s kingdom.

CONCLUSION: Only the truth in Christ can set us free from the bondage of Satan and sin. When Zacchaeus truthfully confessed his sinful past, he was set free. Therefore, standing on and for the truth for a Christian should not be an option, but the norm.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: If it is not the truth, it is not the way.

TOPIC: The Uneasy Way

TEXT: 2Tim.3:10-17

to describe the difficult nature of the pathway to eternal life,
to discover what can help Christians to successfully navigate the difficult wav to eternal life and

to expose the eternal benefits of walking on the narrow and uneasy way that leads to eternal life.

INTRODUCTION: Salvation is free, but not cheap. Therefore, one can say that the Christian race is not as easy as it seems. The songwriter that wrote, “It’s not an easy road, we’re travelling to heaven, and many are the thorns on the way…” is right. Today, we read of Paul’s afflictions from wicked and hostile persecutors on his evangelical journeys, yet he never derailed. Our study guides shall open our eyes more to how uneasy it is and how we can successfully navigate our way through difficulties of being believers, and how to reap the benefits of walking on the narrow and uneasy way.

From Paul’s experience in our Bible Passage today, how can you describe the uneasy way to salvation? Compare with Matt 24:9-11.

CONCLUSION: If all were easy, if all were bright, where would the fight be? By divine prerogative and design, the way to eternal life is not easy, and only the wise and those who have truly made up their minds for Christ and His kingdom can painstakingly stay the full course and berth safely. Make sure your decision is real and authentic.

SUB-THEME: Rogation

TOPIC: Work and walk in Christ

TEXT: Deuteronomy 28:1-14

AIMS:

to study the concept of working and walking in Christ and
to teach the importance of building our enterprises on Christ-likemanners.

INTRODUCTION: Today is Rogation Sunday: a day to pray for God’s blessings on our works and professions. Rogation means passionate prayer for a particular purpose, but we need to do our work in manners that will make our walking with God perfect. ‘Work’ simply means mental or physical efforts applied in other to achieve a purpose or result. Working in Christ therefore means performing profitable duties in godly manner. Walk on the other hand means to move from one point to the other in other to achieve a purpose. Therefore, walk in Christ means going about our daily routines in godly manners. The Bible passage today explains that when we work and walk in God’s ways, we would be blessed beyond measures. Going through our study guides, we shall many facts on working and walking in Christ.

TOPIC: Lifted up by God

TEXT: Phil 2:5-13

AIMS:

to discuss the factors that led to Christ’s uplifting,
to expose us to types of uplifting and

to discuss the Biblical injunctions for God’s uplifting.

INTRODUCTION: Last Thursday, May 9 marked the 40th day after the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and it is remembered as the day he ascended into heaven (Acts 1:9). Today, being the Sunday after, our study shall be centred on being lifted up by God. In this study, we want to see being lifted up by God to mean He steps in and changes our position or status for the best.

STUDY GUIDES

What does lifting up and being lifted up in the context of Matt 4:5-
6, Acts 1:9 and Phil 2:9 mean?
From Phil 2:6-8, critically analyze the qualities that led to the uplifting up
of Jesus Christ by God. How can these qualities help in lifting us up as
Christians?
Is there anything like satanic lifting? Critically discuss this in the
context of Matt 4:5-6. Describe how some people were uplifted in
our generation in the context of Num 16:1-3, 32-35.

CONCLUSION: There is no doubt that every good purpose of God has its satanic versions, including promotion. We should be very careful to know when Satan is approaching us to improve our lives, which invariably will end in degradation (Luke 14:11). As Christians, we should always desire the virtues for humility and godliness so as to be uplifted at God’s own time.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Beware! Satanic uplift starts with pride and ends in shame.

PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 19 2024

THEME: The Christian Race

SUB-THEME: The Significance of Pentecost

TOPIC: Empowered to preach the Gospel

TEXT: Acts 1:8

AIMS:

to study the significance of Pentecost to the Christendom and
to discuss the effect of the Holy Spirit in the propagation of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

INTRODUCTION: Pentecost Sunday (also called Whit Sunday) is a Christian festival, which takes place on the 50th day from or seventh Sunday after Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to His disciples after his return to His father in heaven; who will empower them to preach and teach them in all things. However, He warned them never to leave Jerusalem until they receive the power. Today’s study is highly essential if we would succeed as carriers of the good News of salvation through Jesus Christ.

CONCLUSION: The importance of the Pentecost Sunday cannot be underrated in the Christendom as it reminds us of the importance of waiting upon the Lord for the Holy Spirit empowerment in preaching the right gospel message for the salvation of souls. As Christians, let us always ponder on how best to wait upon the Lord for empowerment by the Holy Spirit.

SUB-THEME: Trinity Sunday
TOPIC: Unity in the Race

TEXT: Acts 4:23-34

i to teach the unity in Christendom as an antidote of Satanic invasion and

to discuss how we can be united effectively even in diversity.

INTRODUCTION: We thank God for another Trinity Sunday; a Sunday that reminds us of the unity of God the father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit as one God in three and not three gods in one. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ brings believers together in the unity of faith with God the father, our maker; Jesus Christ our Saviour, (God the son) and the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier of the Church. Biblical passages reveal the three in one God as one. The early Church operated in this Trinitarian power, which brought about her firm establishment. We can see the power of oppression against the Apostles in action in our text today, but the Church united against this her enemy and conquered the gate of hell.

CONCLUSION: Despite denominational disparity, and doctrinal divergences our priority in preaching the gospel should be focused on winning souls into God’s kingdom. In doing this, the kingdom of Satan will always be depopulated.

TOPIC: The way of Determination

TEXT: Phil 1:18-21

AIMS:

to discuss Paul’s determination in propagating the gospel,
to see the Importance of determination on the course of the narrowpath to salvation and

iii. to study the focus of a determined Christian.

INTRODUCTION: Determination is the act of following a particular course in a resolute and firm manner. Paul was formerly a persecutor, (Gal 1:13,23-24), but in our Bible passage today, (Phil 1:18-21) we can see how resolute he was in preaching the gospel at the expense of his life, using the same virtue. Considering his life as nothing in face of persecution for preaching the gospel is a worthy emulation for all Christians. Let us go into the study guides for more research on a determined Christian on the narrow path.

TOPIC: The Way of Life

TEXT: Jer. 38:1-8

AIM: to discuss the end of the narrow way.

INTRODUCTION: No matter how difficult and rough the narrow way may be, the end result is that it leads to eternal life. Eternal life means where there is no death, pain, frustration or lack of good things. One of the righteous people that enjoyed the dividend of the narrow path on earth was Jeremiah. Jer. 38:1-8 exposed us to how Jeremiah was punished for speaking the truth, but was finally vindicated.

STUDY GUIDES

Describe the persecution of Jeremiah in our Bible text today.
From experience, explain how truth is been persecuted in our
generation especially in the Church of Christ.
Why is it difficult for some leaders to walk in the path of truth and life?

INTRODUCTION: We say happy celebrations to all fathers in Christendom. May the Lord continue to grant you the grace to give godly leadership to your families in Jesus name. As one needs food that gives energy; enhances growth and development in any journey, so is the need for spiritual nourishment for the renewal of our minds and for growth in Christian faith. Our Bible passage reveals how Prophet Ezekiel was fed with the word of God (Vs 1 -2). Initially, it was sweet for the belly (Vs 3), but later it became bitter (Vs 14). Nevertheless, because of the nutrients derived from the food (Word of God) he was strengthened for the journey.

CONCLUSION: As Christians, we need the word of God that speaks of Christ and leads us to Him, whether it is written in the scriptures, spoken by latter-day prophets, or taught by other humble servants of God.
