TOPIC: Ignorance of the Scriptures

TEXT: Acts 8:26-38

AIM: To study how ignorance of the Scriptures can hinder the spiritual growth of a believer.

 

INTRODUCTION

Ignorance of the scripture simply means lack of knowledge or information about thesalvation in the Bible. Our text exposed us to the ignorance of the Ethiopian who was reading a passage he didn’t understand. The exposition of Philip imparts a conviction for him to be baptised and thus became a Christian. Ignorance of the Scripture is capable of retarding the spiritual growth of believers on their way to the kingdom of God.

TOPIC: Girdle of Truth

TEXTS:          Prov 3:1-5

AIMS:

  1. to describe the girdle of truth in biblical perspective
  2. to study the importance as one of the weapons for our Christian journey.

 

INTRODUCTION

The girdle is a symbol of readiness and preparation for battle. The belt of truth is where the Roman soldiers stored their weapon. Without a belt, they could not carry a weapon. In the Bible, truth is characterized by both qualitative and quantitative aspects, as it directly relates truth to God. Indeed, truth is an attribute of God. For the Pilgrim therefore, God’s Word is truth and serves as foundation and as long as we remain in truth of His Word, we shall be empowered to distinguish between false and true gospel.

THEME: GOD’S CHILDREN AS PILGRIMS TO THE HEAVENLY KINGDOM: MANIFESTATION OF GOD’S REIGN ON EARTH

SUB-THEME: Equipped for Pilgrimage 2

TOPIC: Breastplate of Righteousness

TEXTS:          Ezek 18:4-9

AIMS:

  1. to study the breastplate of righteousness
  2. to discuss righteousness as a spiritual shield against sin and eternal death.

 

INTRODUCTION

A Roman soldier’s breastplate is made of bronze or chain-mail and serves protection for the heart, lungs and other organs. Without it, the soldier is vulnerable to attack and death.  Our text today exposed us to the fact that the only weapon that can protect us from been vulnerable to evil thoughts and sinful attacks in the heart;that leads to spiritual death is the breastplate of righteousness.

CONCLUSION: Isaiah 33:14-15 revealed that the sinners in Zion are broken down; fear hath seized the ungodly, who are suffering for their ways. They asked themselves, “who among us shall dwell in Zion, where the splendour of the Divine Majesty is like a consuming fire? Who of us shall dwell in Jerusalem, where the ungodly are judged and delivered into hell for an eternal burning?” and the answer is in our topic for today: those with the breastplate of righteousness. Christians, should guide ourselves with this, so as to be able to withstand the righteous throne of God.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: To avoid vulnerability to sinfulness, arm yourself with the breastplate of righteousness.

TOPIC: Buckled Shoes for Peaceful Gospel

TEXTS:          Isa 52:7-12

AIMS:

  1. to study the concept of buckled shoes for gospel of peace
  2. to discuss the effectiveness of the gospel of peace in a turbulent generation.

 

INTRODUCTION

The buckled shoes of a Roman soldier help rough terrain, unlike other foot-wears. In our text today, prophet Isaiah proclaimed the freedom of the Jews from the land of slavery and the nature of the carrier of this good news. As PILGRIMS TO HEAVENLY KINGDOM, having our feet fitted with the shoes of the gospel of peace allow us to be ready to always preach the gospel message to the world around us. The importance of peace in the life of a Pilgrim is to always advance onto the battlefield unafraid, because we carry with us the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection for the salvation of the world. Therefore, as Pilgrims, we should always be prepared to spread the good News of salvation when convenient and when inconvenient.

CONCLUSION: As the buckled shoes prevent dangers, so is any Christian that preaches only Christ and Him crucified is equipped with the power of God. They no more live according to the flesh, but in Christ who lives in them.

THEME:   GOD’S CHILDREN AS PILGRIMS TO THE HEAVENLY KINGDOM: MANIFESTATION OF GOD’S REIGN ON EARTH

SUB-THEME: Equipped for Pilgrimage 4

TOPIC: Shield of Faith

TEXTS:          Rom 8:35-39

AIMS:

  1. to differentiate between Faith and the shield of faith
  2. to expose the effects of the shield of Faith on satanic arrows.

 INTRODUCTION

In study 34 of this outline, we studied Faith as a manifestation of the fruit of the spirit. Then, we analysed various manifestations of faith by Biblical heroes and how manifestation of our Christian faith can set the basis for soul-winning into Christ’s kingdom. In this study, we shall concentrate on how we can defend or proof the efficacy of our Christian Faith amidst various arrows of the enemies. A shield is used mainly as a form of protection and offensive to knock down enemies in the battle front. Shield of faith is meant to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil ones ranging from false teachings, false miracles and arrows of persecution.

CONCLUSION: The shield of faith covers our most vulnerable spots, especially our hearts as it can be filled with fear, hopelessness, discouragement, self-pity and all satanic arrows of wickedness. Therefore, we should always put it on in our journey to the kingdom of God.

THEME:   GOD’S CHILDREN AS PILGRIMS TO THE HEAVENLY KINGDOM: MANIFESTATION OF GOD’S REIGN ON EARTH

SUB-THEME: Equipped   for Pilgrimage 5

TOPIC: Helmet of Salvation

TEXTS:          Luk 21:34-36; Eph. 6:17

AIMS:

  1. to analyse the concept of Helmet in the work of our Salvation and
  2. to discuss the spiritual importance of having the Helmet of Salvation as Christians.

 

INTRODUCTION

Helmet is a hard or padded hat that is purposely meant to protect the head against fracture or total breakage during an accident. The human head is the most important of all parts of the body and it houses major sensory organs, and without the head, the whole body is useless. Salvation is deliverance from our sins and the harmful consequences which is eternal death. Therefore, as the head is the most important part of the body, so is salvation the most important part of our Christian. Without salvation of our souls, all other Christian livelihood is useless and in vain. Therefore, the spiritual helmet of salvation is the insulation of our minds against sinful suggestions, desires, and traps the devil may lay for us as it is analysed in our text for today (Lk 21:34-36).

  2. to analyse how current human challenges can be surmounted through the spiritual sword.

 

INTRODUCTION

The Sword of the Spirit according to Ephesians 6:17 is the Word of God. It is as an offensive weapon against the enemies. Our Bible passage today reveals how Jesus conquered satan and his tempting power with the word of God. The more we study meditate on the word of God, the more we see the mystery and secret of God’s power to deliver from all challenges.

 

STUDY GUIDE:

  1. Biblically, define the ‘Sword of the Spirit’ and why is it called the ‘Sword of the Spirit? Psa 119:50; John 6: 63; Eph. 6:10. —————————————————

THEME:   GOD’S CHILDREN AS PILGRIMS TO THE HEAVENLY KINGDOM: MANIFESTATION OF GOD’S REIGN ON EARTH

SUB-THEME: Living the Victorious Life 1

TOPIC: Victory over the World

TEXTS:          2Tim 3:10-15

AIMS: i. to clarify the geographical context of “the world” from the biblical contexts and

  1. to understand having victory over the world as against the consequences of gaining the world.

INTRODUCTION

Geographically, the world is the planets and all the people on it.. Biblically, “the world” means the universe and everything that God has made as recorded in Psa 24:1. “The world” was first used to mean ‘human existence and life on earth’ as opposed to future life in heaven or hell. Victory is a triumph and decisive superiority in any battle or contest. The pilgrims’ Victory over “the world” on earth simply means triumphing over every discouraging, intimidating, depressing, oppressive and depriving challenge we encounter in our Christian journey on earth.

STUDY GUIDE:

  1. How can you explain the geographical and biblical context of ‘the world’ according to Psa 24:1; Jer 25:26: Matt 4:8. —————————————

CONCLUSION: The nearer we get to God the less we are fascinated to the things of the world. This cannot be achieved without the power of the Holy Spirit; because, our victory comes from within, not from without, as the Holy Spirit within us gives us victory over the world. He teaches us the ways and the wills of God.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:  Be possessed of the Holy Spirit and conquer the world.

MEMORY VERSE:  1 John 5: 4 “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith.”

AIMS:

i.to understand study the concept of victory over sin

  1. to expound on the work of redemption as the basis of our victory over sin.

 

INTRODUCTION

The doctrine of sin is central to Christianity, since It is an immoral act considered to be a transgression of divine law and its basic message is about redemption in Christ. Overcoming sin starts by realizing the fact that our body has been purchased by God, and through Christ’s redemption, you can have the power to live in victory over sin. Our Bible passage today clearly exposed us to the fact that only those in Christ Jesus, who had been born of the Spirit have the power over sin and carnalities of this world.

 

STUDY GUIDE:

CONCLUSION: The Redemption work of our Lord Jesus Christ at Calvary formed the basis for our victory over sin. As pilgrims to the kingdom of God, we must always live sacrificial lives of righteousness through wish the sinful works in the world shall be rendered meaningless to our Christian livelihood.

 

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Christ conquered sin, only His followers can enjoy victory over sin.

THEME: GOD’S CHILDREN AS PILGRIMS TO THE HEAVENLY KINGDOM: MANIFESTATION OF GOD’S REIGN ON EARTH

SUB-THEME: Living the Victorious Life 3

TOPIC: Victory over Satan

TEXTS: Luke 10: 17-20

AIMS:

  1. to expound the operation of Satan,
  2. to study the victory of Jesus over satan and
  3. to discover how we can continuously live victorious lives over satan.

INTRODUCTION

Satan is traditionally understood as an angel who rebelled against God and was cast out of heaven with other “fallen” angels before the creation of humankind. Biblically, he is always against every work of God. Our text today revealed how the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ brought satan under submission. Satan manifests in various ways to bring down Children of God; but with the garment of righteousness and the pure Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in our mouth, we shall surely conquer him.

CONCLUSION: Though Satan has been defeated, and eventually will be thrown into the lake of fire, he is still actively spreading evil. Therefore, as pilgrims to the kingdom of heaven, we need to always put on our garment of righteousness with the testimony of Christ’s victory over the power of Hell in our mouth, so as to continuously defeat satan and all his agents.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: To sustain victory over Satan, remain in Christ and the word of God.

MEMORY VERSE:  Rom 16:20 “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen”.

TOPIC: Victory over Death and the power of Hell

TEXTS: 1cor 15:50-57

AIMS:

  1. to study the concept of death and hell
  2. to expound the criteria for the Christians’ victory over death and the power of hell.

 

INTRODUCTION

Death is the irreversible cessation of all vital functions especially as indicated by permanent stoppage of the heart, respiration, and brain activity. Hell is a place regarded in various religions as a spiritual realm of evil and suffering, often depicted as a place of perpetual fire beneath the earth where the wicked are punished after death. Victory over death and the power of Hell meansovercoming the world, sin and satan while on earth. Since death is the reward for sin and worldliness through obedient to the dictates of satan, the pilgrims to heavenly kingdom therefore need total victory in other to avoid the second death in Hell fire.

We are bound to leave one day to eternity through death. Remember; to the righteous, death is a means to eternal life, while to the unrighteous, death is a means to hell and eternal suffering. Therefore, be wise today to choose righteous livelihood. Happy New Year in advance.
