The Place of A woman in a Marriage
I don’t know what you believe or what you are thought about marriage. Arguing on the Origin of Marriage from a Biblical Perspective; Adam needed more than a companion. God was already coming to keep him company. This is actually the place of a woman in a Marriage.
Excuse me, please, do get annoyed by this. Read further to find out the main point we are driving at. And remember we are talking about Christian marriage.
Origin of Marriage
“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” Gen. 2:18 (NIV).
This is but the first time during creation God saw something that was not good in all He has created — man being alone.
From the Biblical inference, Man was the first to be created. The woman was not among the plan in the creation. The woman came into the limelight because the need for three Cs arose which only the woman could provide. She was called a suitable helper.
This need for the three Cs gave birth to Marriage.
The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica defined Marriage as;
“a legally and socially sanctioned union, usually between a man and a woman, that is regulated by-laws, rules, customs, beliefs, and attitudes that prescribe the rights and duties of the partners and accords status to their offspring (if any)”.
Some bible scholars argue that it was loneliness that drove Adam to long for a companion. They are not wrong. God confirmed this claim when He said; “it is not good for a man to be alone”. The first man waited alone in the large garden of Eden, until in the cool of the evening when God would come to be with him and had fellowship with him.
God was coming to keep Adam company yet something was still needed in the life of Man. Keeping him company wasn’t enough for him. There were other needs. These needs gave rise to the creation of a woman. These 3 Cs were pressed together to form the word “helpmeet”.
The Place of A woman in a Marriage
Have you ever thought about the condition of the garden all the while Adam was living in it alone before Eve came? How do our men keep the house before the arrival of the wives? How do the bedclothes look like? How beautifully arranged was the bachelor’s house before the helpmeet arrives? That was the case with Adam and the Garden.
Adam didn’t need a companion alone. After all, God was coming in person to keep him company. He needed a cook. He left every morning to dress the garden when he came back, he would be too weak to set the table.
Eve arrived and took up the role of a cook. That was actually why it was easy for her to feed her husband with the Serpentine fruit. She was in charge of the kitchen, whatever she cooked the man ate.
Adam was not meeting up. He was not meeting up with the need of his stomach in the kitchen. He was not meeting up in tidying up the garden of Eden. He littered the Sink with unwashed dishes. He was always out looking out and waiting for the arrival of the Creator for the evening fellowship because there was no mate to chat with.
Marriage began in the garden of Eden. It was contracted because the need for a suitable helper arose. The woman was created to be a helpmeet in the family to the man.
Adam was in need of a Companion. He needed a Cleaner. He needed a Cook. He needed an arranger and a co-builder. He wanted continuity.
His fellow man would not serve in these capacities. If he could, God would have created other Adams and added to the first Adam.
This is actually what Christian marriage is today. The wives understand that the husbands are the heads of the family. They undertake these roles in the family exhibiting the feature of submissiveness. But Modernity terms this type of marriage slavery.
