OYO SDP guber Candidate, Lana Steps down to Support Seyi Makinde. On Tuesday, Michael Lana, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, announced his withdrawal from the race ahead of the forthcoming polls in order to support Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The press conference was held at Iyaganku Quarters in Ibadan, the state capital. Lana, who is a former Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, disclosed that he had consulted widely before stepping down to back the incumbent governor. So far, he has no regrets making such decision.
Furthermore, he indicated that the decision was made in conjunction with the SDP House of Assembly candidates. Lana stated that during his recent radio interview, he informed the public that any decision to step down would be a collective one by all candidates, particularly the SDP House of Assembly candidates, of which he is the governorship flag-bearer. He added that he had consulted with some national officers of the party and his supporters from trade unions, traditional rulers, market associations, and religious bodies. “During my radio interview recently, I duly informed members of the public that wherever I step down it would be a decision by all candidates, especially the House of Assembly candidates of the SDP, of which I am the governorship flag-bearer.
“As you are aware, in almost all radio interviews I featured, I was asked whether, as it had become the habit of this party, I too would step down at the end of the day. Believing I was in the midst of ideologically sound members, and knowing myself as a principled person, I always answered in the negative. I believed fervently that my gospel of issues and ideas would earn me the victory that the people of the state deserve” he said.
Lana acknowledged that during his radio interviews, he was often asked whether he would also step down, considering that it had become a norm in the party. He explained that he always answered in the negative, believing that his message of issues and ideas would win the people’s mandate. However, recent events in the past few weeks have proved him wrong as some party chieftains only believe in money politics and victory by vote-buying. Lana lamented that some party leaders in the state had sold out the party for a pittance and declared for the opposition without their knowledge or consent. Following several consultations, Lana and the SDP House of Assembly candidates have decided to back Governor Seyi Makinde, who they consider a truly progressive candidate that will serve the best interests of the neglected and aggrieved party members, the candidates, and the people of the state. Thus, they have resolved to urge their supporters to vote massively for Makinde of PDP in the forthcoming polls scheduled for Saturday, March 18, 2023, and elect him as governor of the state.
