positive change to national events and politics for their benefit.

INTRODUCTION:

The text shows that Daniel and his friends learned all they could about their new culture, so they could do their work with excellence; at the same time they maintained a steadfast allegiance to God, and cleverly influenced the government and culture towards godliness.  The urgent need for Christians to be enlightened both in the word of God, and current affairs – politics, culture, history, etc cannot be overemphasized.  A good blend of these will enable the church raise the Daniels who will bring the will of God to bear on our national life (Daniel 4:1 – 4).

  1. Highlight some advantages which sound knowledge of politics, culture, history and current affairs

gave to Daniel and his friends in the government of Babylon (Dan. 1:17–20; 9:1 – 4).

  1. From these scriptures: Dan. 9:1 – 4; 22-23; Esther 4:11, 5:1-3, 8:3 – 8; Nehemiah 1:1 – 4, 2:1 – 6;

discuss how sound knowledge of scriptures, history and current affairs enabled God’s people bring change to national events and politics to their advantage.

  1. What lessons can the church draw from the experiences of God’s people in this study to bring change and reform to our nation? Discuss in line with 2Peter 1:5
  1. Identify two important steps Mordecai took in Esther 4:1-2,12-14 What is the danger and immunity lessons we can draw from these references?

CONCLUSION

There is no doubt Christians need more than spiritual knowledge to survive in a pluralistic world. A good blend of spiritual, political, historical and constitutional knowledge etc, will certainly be of great advantage if our Christianity must be impactful.

FOOD FOR THOUHT: Knowledge gives us power.

MEMORY VERSE: Dan 1:17 “As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams”.

THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE

SUB THEME: Mandate of the Church for a noble and godly rule (4)

TOPIC: Nation building

TEXT: Gen. 18:18 – 19

AIMS:

  1. to impress on us the importance of grooming our children in godliness.

critically consider whether we are preparing our youths adequately or leadership roles in the future.

INTRODUCTION

“Charity;, it is said “begins at home”.  For any nation to have godly leaders, it is imperative that godliness is taught and practiced in homes, churches and mission schools for as preparation of future godly leaders.  This is clearly God’s mandate to believers whether they be in families, churches, schools, orphanages,. The widespread neglect of this very important area of family life has led to immeasurable damage to the propagation of Christian family values, and the practice of biblical Christianity in our modern society.  The result is the massive failure being experienced in all facets of our national life.

STUDY GUIDE

  1. What is God’s injunction to Christians in the context of: Gen. 18:18 –19; Deut. 4:9 –10; Prov. 22:6?
  2. Discuss how Christians’ strict adherence to the injunctions in Gen. 18:18 – 19; Deut. 4:9 – 10; Prov. 22:6; 2Tim. 1:5–7 can help in building a nation where immorality does not reign.
  1. Mention some practices that need to be addressed in Christian homes today, especially ungodly dressing, disrespect to elders, and unfaithfulness if actually our homes are to be groomed for future nation.
  1. With reference to Prov 22:6; 1Sam 1:22; Est 2:7&10; 2 Tim 1: 5-7, how can we prepare our children for future leadership positions?

CONCLUSION

The task of raising children does not end with sending them to very good schools, but we must ensure

they also get the best moral education they require to be godly adults in future. If we can consistently

abide by this, surely a better generation of rulers awaits our society.

FOOD FOR THOUHT: Education without character building is equal to a decadent future

MEMORY VERSE:  Prov. 22:6. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will

not depart from it”.

THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE

SUB THEME: Mandate of the Church for a noble and godly rule (5)

TOPIC: Exemplary character on duty posts

TEXT: Gen. 39:7–10

AIMS:

  1. to remind us that as Christians we have character to protect, especially when we occupy positions

of trust and authority,

  1. to teach the Christian virtues and values of office holders and

iii. to highlight some negative character traits that destroy rather than build up our nation.

INTRODUCTION

The colour of the skin does not determine the value of a person, neither does the tribe, profession,

educational qualification or creed.  The true value of a person is his/her character.  The content of

character is what tells the world that a person is a follower of Jesus Christ.  Virtues like humility,

integrity, piety, punctuality, patience, self-control, love, and loyalty, characterized the life of Jesus and

these must be dominant in the lives of all who are truly His disciples.  It is necessary that we exhibit these

qualities wherever we find ourselves if our impact as Christians in noble nation building is to be felt.

STUDY GUIDE

  1. From the text, describe the position and the virtue of Joseph.
  2. From Gen. 39:7–9; Esther 2:21–23; Dan. 1:8, identify some excellent character traits Daniel and his

companions exhibited, which Christians in office ought to emulate for nation building today.

  1. How can such virtues as humility, integrity, piety, punctuality, patience, self-control, love, and loyalty

help leaders to discharge noble duties in the society? Discuss in the context of Neh 1:1-4,7; Neh 6:15

and Luk 3:10-16.

  1. Highlight some negative traits that may obstruct Christian impact in nation building. Deut 27:25; Prov

15:27; Gal 1:10; Eph 6:5-7.

CONCLUSION

Christians should always remember that whatever profession or office they occupy, they are there as

Ambassadors of Christ and the Church. The character they exhibit will go a long way to assist leaders or

rulers in their discharge of duties in noble ways for the growth of the society.

FOOD FOR THOUHT: Where the word cannot go or reach, character will speak.

MEMORY VERSE:  Gen. 39:9 “There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back

anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin

against God”?

SUB THEME: Mandate of the Church for a noble and godly rule (6)

TOPIC: Civic responsibility

TEXT: Matt. 17:24-27

AIMS:

  1. to study the concept of Civic responsibilities in line with Christian behaviors and
  2. to expose the negative effects of civic irresponsibility on the Christian faith.

INTRODUCTION

As God’s people, we are foreigners on earth because our loyalty is always to our real King (Jesus). However, in as much as we are still in this world, we have some roles to play in nation building as citizens or residents of any nation we find ourselves. Our Lord Jesus Christ has left for us the legacy of civil responsibilities both by action and speech. He paid his tax and also admonished with wisdom for others to pay. Apostle Peter further expounded on these by admonishing us never to suffer as law breakers.

STUDY GUIDE

  1. How can you explain the concept of civil responsibilities in line with our texts today? Ref: Mark 12:13-17.
  1. As Christians, what lessons can we draw from Matt. 17:24-27; Rom. 13:1–7; 1Peter 4:15?
  2. Mention and discuss some of the ways Christians are to co-operate with government and their effects on the wellbeing of society and nation building. Rom. 13:7-10 and 1Peter 4:14-17
  1. What are the effects of such behaviors as: traffic offences, examination malpractices, electoral malpractices, falsification of personal data records, rape, cultism, and giving and taking of bribes on any Christian and on the Christendom?  Have you been engaged in any of these? Now that you know what the scriptures teach, what will you do?

CONCLUSION

As Christians we should not be caught breaking, circumventing the laws of the land or aiding and abetting others to do or pretend we do not know what they are doing.  Remember that, as Ambassadors of Christ, we are salt and light of the world.  Performing our civic duties will not only radiate these virtues but also contribute to the positive growth of the society.

FOOD FOR THOUHT: Christians who will live in a delicate glass house should learn never to throw

stones.

MEMORY VERSE: 1Pet 4:15 “But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer,

THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE

SUB THEME: Evidence of godly rule-1

TOPIC: Humility

TEXTS: 2Chron. 34:26-33

AIMS:

  1. to teach us that earthly leaders exist only, at the behest of the Almighty, Omnipotent God.
  2. to teach that humility under the fear of the Lord is an evidence of a virtuous and godly ruler.

INTRODUCTION

In life, nobility does not mean feeling superior to other people. You may grow and become nobler and superior to your former self. Some contemporary rulers and leaders wrongly assume that conquest and success at elections are all that they require for good governance and the prosperity of the people, they lead or govern. Godly fear, humility and a heart to hearken unto the dictates and biddings of the Almighty God are the surest ways to peace, tranquility and good governance. Of all the kings of both the Northern and the Southern Kingdoms, Josiah excelled more than any one of them, because he had the fear of God. The same can be said of the king of Nineveh (Jonah 3:6–10); who listened to, received and obeyed the messages of the prophets Huldah and Jonah, and they, with their subjects repented and prospered.

STUDY GUIDE

  1. According to the text and the introduction, how can the humility of a ruler bring peace and joy to the

citizens and the entire land? Ref to Esth 8:3-8 (ref to 4:11, 15-16); Jonah 3:10.

  1. What do you understand in this statement “ In life, nobility does not … and superior to your former self

; as stated above. Discuss in the context of John 3:5-9; John 3:28-30.

  1. As Christians, what moral lessons can we draw from the attitudes of Josiah, the King of Nineveh and

John the Baptist and Jesus Christ (Matt 3:13-15)?

  1. How do contemporary rulers and leaders in civil and political offices react to God’s messages and

divine instructions in the contemporary world? Matt 14:3-4

CONCLUSION

Pride and pomposity have become the bane of most of world leaders and rulers in politics,, culture, and

the church. King Josiah purposed in his heart to serve the God of his forefather – David. He singled

himself out as the most successful ruler among all the other Kings in both the northern and the Southern

Kingdoms.

THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE.

SUB-THEME: Evidence of godly rule- 2

TOPIC: Love

TEXTS: 1Sam 30:1-20

AIMS

  1. to analyze the impact of love in godly rulers and
  2. to expose the effect of unloving attitudes of unloving rulers.

INTRODUCTION

The text today shows the effect of the love of David, a ruler with over six hundred soldiers and the city of

Ziklag towards his captured citizens. It also reveals the negative effect of the unloving Amalekite warrior

who decided to leave behind his wounded soldier. Many nations are suffering today under the hostage of

insurgencies and banditry just because of the insensitivity of their rulers to the plight of the citizens. The

Bible says in Prov 16:12 “It is an abomination for kings to commit wicked acts,For a throne is

established on righteousness”.The study today will expose more the importance of the love of a ruler for

his subjects.

STUDY GUIDE

  1. Examine the attitude of David in 1Sam 30:3-4 and justify his love for his people. Compare this with

our contemporary leaders; can we see a leader or ruler who has empathetic tears for his/her people in

distress?

  1. How can the unloving attitude of a ruler be to the detriment of the people he/she leads? 1Sam 30:13-
  2. Compare this with the kind of insurgence and banditry occasioned by the unloving attitude of some

leaders towards citizens.

  1. How can love be a significant virtue for nation building? 2Sam 8:14-18; 1Pet 4:8-10;
  2. Daniel was a leader in a foreign land. How do you understand his actions towards his own people in

Dan 9:1-3, 16-19? Compare his attitude to what is mostly the case with today’s political office holders in

this generation especially in Nigeria.

CONCLUSION

The easiest way to know an unloving wicked ruler is his/her insensitivity to the plight of citizens. Such

will never care about workers’ salaries; they never care about the tears and agony of their citizens in the

hands of insurgents. However, a godly ruler will be ready to go the extra mile in in order to have the

good welfare of his people.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: God is love and godly rulers must rule with LOVE.

TOPIC: Equity

TEXTS: 1Kings 3:16-28

AIMS:

  1. to torchlight the biblical context of equity
  2. to expose the dangers in a lopsided rule of citizens.

INTRODUCTION

“Equity” simply means, the quality of being fair and impartial. Unfortunately, we live in a world where

inequality in judgment, job-provisions, wealth sharing and security of citizens prevails. Most destruction

and oppression are targeted at the poor and ordinary folks in the world. However, the texts today show

some rulers in the Bible who judged and ruled with equity. Do we still have such rulers in the

contemporary world, who will prefer loyalty and humility of a foreign slave to the pride of a citizen

queen? Can we still find a ruler who will prefer to judge the pronouncement of the best friend in the

interest of a gateman in his palace? Our study guide will beam more light on these.

STUDY GUIDE

  1. What is equity? And how do you explain it in the context of today's study text? (1Kings 3:25-27)
  2. Let us study Esth 6:10 and justify the impartial compensation of King Ahasuerus to Mordecai against

his love for Haman. Compare Haman as a Personal Assistant to a governor with Mordecai as a gateman

in a governor’s office, visualize the judgment with the contemporary political judgment of issues.

  1. Critically examine the action of Apostle Peter in Gal 2:11-13 and air your view in relation to the issue

of ethnic bias in our contemporary world.

4a. In a nation where appointment into political position is lopsided, critically discuss the fate of an

‘Esther’ (a slave but qualified to be a queen) and the possibility of replacing a ‘Vashti’ (an indigene and

incumbent queen).

4b. In what ways can the celebration of mediocrity at the expense of meritorious excellence affect the

growth of a nation?

CONCLUSION

With so much oppression, suffering, social injustice, denial of rights and privileges by correctional

institutions and so much contention, discord and uprisings, lack of basic human rights, systemic racism,

police brutality, a broken criminal justice system, unequal access to healthcare and religious oppression,

injustices that are in dire need of attention in order to ensure freedom, justice, and equality for all

TEXTS: Dan. 6:14-27

AIMS:

  1. to discuss empathy as an essential virtue for any God-chosen ruler
  2. to expatiate on the effect of empathy on both the ruler and the governed

INTRODUCTION

The best way is for a leader to show the governed his empathy with them in their moments of challenge.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It is the practical assumption of the

position of the victim of challenge or suffering. King Darius expressed his love for Daniel in sharing a

sleepless night with him and even as early as possible, had already come to the entrance of the lions' den

to ask after the welfare of Daniel. Jesus assumed the position of a close relative to Lazarus and shared in

weeping with the family. Can we find rulers in our contemporary society that easily empathize with their

citizens?

STUDY GUIDE

  1. From the text today, define empathy and relate it with Rom 12:15.
  2. “The peak of nobility for rulers is to empathize with the ruled/governed”. Discuss this in line with Dan

6:14, 18-20; John 11:35-36 and how can rulers assume the position of a suffering citizen especially in a

country where leaders travel abroad for medical checks, where politicians send their children abroad for

education, where rulers are indifferent to the plight of victims of insurgency

  1. Discuss the effect of King Darius’ empathy in line with the attitude of Jesus and his disciples in Matt

14:14-16.

  1. How empathic are our contemporary leaders towards the people they are leading? Mat. 7:12, Luke

6:35, Luke 10:25-37, Rom. 15:1

CONCLUSION

Until we have godly leaders and rulers who can tearfully feel the pains of losing a child or wife to

insurgents; until we have such godly rulers who know how dilapidated our hospitals are; until we have

such rulers who understand the impact of strikes through their children in academic institutions, and until

we have rulers who know what it means to collapse in a pension office, until then, the suffering of the

masses may continue. May God Almighty raise for us such empathic and godly rulers in Jesus’ name.

TEXTS: Job 2:1-10

AIMS:

  1. to explain Integrity from the Biblical perspective,
  2. to critically discuss the level of integrity that is exhibited by contemporary rulers and

iii. to teach the kind of integrity expected of Christians in leadership.

INTRODUCTION

“Integrity”, simply means, “the quality of being honest and having strong moral and spiritual principles.

It is a state whereby someone is known for the principles he or she appraises with undivided loyalty”.

Job, in our text today maintained the level of his integrity with God by not compromising in line with his

wife’s advice. It is highly disgusting in our contemporary society to hear a leader or ruler saying or

promising the masses of some goodies and for the promise never being fulfilled throughout the tenure. It

is highly undignified to read a national budget for important areas of interest like Education, Health and

Infrastructure and yet, the budget is never implemented. The study today will shed more light on this as

we discuss further.

STUDY GUIDE

  1. Define Integrity in the context of Job 2:3. How can you justify the strong spiritual principle of Job?

Job 2:9-10

  1. Analyze the contents of integrity as in Paul’s admonition to Titus in Tit 2:7-8.
  2. Compare 1Sam 17:25 with 1Sam 18:17-19 and judge the integrity of King Saul. In the context of King

Saul’s integrity, critically point out some of the failed promises of our contemporary political rulers at

local, state, national, judicial, academic and health levels.

  1. What should be the Christian standard for leaders or those in positions of power? Prov 28:6; Matt 5:37;

Acts 5:29; Col 3:17

CONCLUSION

Our God will never promise a thing and fail His people. He is also looking for a ruler after His own heart in religious, political, academic and social circle; who will rule His people with His fear. For any nation or society to enjoy peace and prosperity, there is need for godly rulers who rule with integrity.

TOPIC: Peace

TEXTS: 1Kings 4:20-24

AIMS:

  1. to highlight what constitutes peaceful coexistence from a contemporary perspective and
  2. to teach the basis for global peace as Christ’s livelihood.

INTRODUCTION

Peace is a stress-free state of security and calmness that comes when there is no fighting or war in a nation or social set-up. In such a situation, everything co-exists in perfect harmony and freedom. The reign of Solomon is a biblical example that reveals the possibility of a peaceful rule in any particular government. However, there are factors that contribute to a peaceful rule and also the ones that contribute to the reign of terror in the contemporary society. What are these factors especially in terms of global peace? Isa 2:1-4; 1Pe 3:10-11

STUDY GUIDE

  1. Analyze equal distribution of power, position, wealth and security in the context of Solomon’s reign in

the text today (1Kings 4:1-20) and discuss how these can be major factors for peaceful reign.

  1. Go swiftly through 1Kings 3:11-13 and analyze the bases for Solomon’s peaceful reign. From your

analysis, what are the bases for peaceful coexistence in any government and compare with the factors

destroying the peace in our contemporary society?

  1. How can you explain peace in the global perspective and mention some of the war-torn areas in the

world and the possible causes. Discuss this in the context of Isa 2:4

  1. How can the knowledge of God be an important factor for a global and peaceful co-existence? Prov

16:7; Isa 2:3; John 14:27; Rom 8:31; 1Pet 3:10-11.

CONCLUSION

As long as Satan continues to be the prince of this world (Rev 12:9), he will always disturb global peace

and continuously instigate wars. Only those in Christ Jesus and who have the fear of the Almighty God

will continue to factorize peace and live by it in the world. As Christians, we have a challenge to always

  1. to appraise the vanity of this world and
  2. to expatiate on reasons for a heavenly focus instead of earthly wealth accumulation.

INTRODUCTION

Vanity in the words of the preacher implies the pointlessness of all human

activities in this world. The futility in accumulating wealth, fame, position and knowledge is a pointer to

us as Christians that this world is not ours, but heaven, where we have our citizenship to enjoy eternal

AIMS:

  1. to explain the meaning of self-crucifixion,
  2. to differentiate between living in the flesh and living in Christ and

iii. to expose the importance of self-crucifixion to our eternal reign with God.

INTRODUCTION

To guarantee our eternal reign with God, believers must crucify self. Self-crucifixion simply means disciplining the flesh against sinful habits. It is a process in which one doesn’t need to be told to depart from iniquity, but can easily see the enslaving nature of sins and the glorious freedom in living a Christ- like life. (Gal 2:20)

STUDY GUIDES

  1. How can you explain the term “self-crucifixion” according to Rom 6:6-8; 12-13?
  2. According to Rom 6:3-4; how can you explain Christian Baptism to an unbeliever?
  3. What do we mean by “New life in Christ” according to Gal 2:20; Tit 2:13-14 and 1Peter 4:1-4 and differentiate between life in Christ and life in the flesh. Gal 5:24.
  1. What is the importance of self-Crucifixion to our eternal reign with God? Rev 21:7-8; 22:14-15.

CONCLUSION

As Christians, we must always crave for the grace and ability to always see the enslaving nature of sinful livelihood by dedicating our lives to godly living in Christ Jesus so as to continuously see the importance of eternal reign with God.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Dedication to sin leads to eternal bondage while dedication to Christ leads to eternal freedom.

THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE

SUB-THEME: The eternal reign with God-3

TOPIC: Act of discipleship

TEXTS: Matt 28:18-20

AIMS:

  1. to introduce the biblical concept of discipleship,
  2. to discuss the conditions for faithful discipleship and

iii. to point out the consequences for lack of discipleship.

INTRODUCTION:

We thank God for another Advent Sunday which is the beginning of the Christian calendar. The Advent season is always a period for sober reflection on the second coming of Christ to judge the world and to reign eternally as the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Unlike other ruling in this world, “In His days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace; so long as the moon endureth”. Psalm 72:7  KJV

Therefore, as we continue to prepare to meet and reign with God, it is most essential that we add to heaven’s population through the act of discipleship. The greatest commission by our Lord Jesus Christ to all believers is to go out and make more of His disciples. How then do we disciple others and populate God’s kingdom?

STUDY GUIDES

  1. Define discipleship in the context of Matt 28:19-20; Acts 2:41.
  2. In the context of Luk 19:1-10; Acts 9:26-27 how can we disciple sinners in our locality? Mention the

consequences of failure in discipleship in these texts: Matt 10:33;Mk 8:38; 2Ti 2:12.

  1. What are the conditions for faithful discipleship according to Mt 16:24; Lu 14:26; Joh 8:31.
  2. What is the eternal reward for faithful disciples of Christ? Matt 10:32; Luk 15:10; Re 14:3-5

CONCLUSION

The statement by Jesus that: “whoever denies me on earth I will deny him in heaven” simply means:

whoever fails to propagate the gospel for soul-winning into God’s kingdom will be denied eternal reign

with God. Therefore, it is time for us to wake up to discipleship.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: There is joy in heaven for any redeemed sinner.

MEMORY VERSE: Luk 15:10 “Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth”.

THEME: The Lord God and the Reign of Peace.

SUB-THEME: The eternal reign with God-4

TOPIC: Sacrificial livelihood-

TEXTS: Luk 10:25-37.

AIM:

  1. to teach Christian giving as part of our duties for eternal kingdom and
  2. to expatiate on the consequences of an uncharitable attitude in Christendom.

INTRODUCTION

Sacrificial livelihood is a life that caters for the needy and the indigents. Our text today shows the importance of caring for the needy to God and the eternal grave consequence of failure to do so. The Bible clearly states that we will always have the needy and the poor around us. Our caring for them is highly essential for our eternal reign with Christ. (Matt 25:34-36)

STUDY GUIDE:

  1. Reflect on the text today and analyze “Sacrificial livelihood”
  2. How effective are Christians in helping each other in our generation (if at all they are doing so)? Exemplify this with the story of Lazarus and the rich man in Luk 16:20-21.
  1. How can our congregational members or parish be of help to those in need among them? Read Deut 15:7-11 and Acts 4:32-37.
  1. What is the consequence of neglecting the poor and needy? Matt 25:41-46.

CONCLUSION

STUDY 50 3RD SUNDAY IN ADVENT DECEMBER 11 2022

THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE.

SUB-THEME: The eternal reign with God-1

TOPIC: Circumcision of the heart.

TEXTS: Rom 2:26-29

AIMS:

  1. to appraise the importance of the heart to the body,
  2. to teach the circumcision of the heart and

iii. to expound on the importance of heart circumcision to our godly livelihood.

INTRODUCTION

The heart is the central or innermost part of the body from where blood is pumped to all other parts of the body. As the heart is important to the physical body, so it is to our spiritual nature as Christians. Circumcision of the heart simply means the purging of our hearts from all sinful thoughts for the renewal of the thoughts of our hearts and minds through the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Rom 12:1-2. This is very important and compulsory for any believer who will reign with God.

STUDY GUIDE

  1. From the text today, expatiate on physical circumcision as a Jew and spiritual circumcision as Christians. Ref: Jer 4:3-4; Rom 12:1-2.
  1. Is there anything like a dirty or clean heart? If yes, describe a dirty or clean heart. Mk 7:20-23; Acts 5:3-4; Phil 4:8.
  1. How important is the circumcision of our hearts to reigning eternally with God? Psalm 24:3-5; Matt 5:8; Jam 4:8; Rev 21:27.
  1. There is a common sentence during Lenten season: “Rend your heart, and not your garments.” Explain this in the context of Joel 2:12-13;

CONCLUSION

Every Christian who has the eternal kingdom of God as his/her goal, should endeavor to circumcise their hearts in other to reign eternally with God instead of seeking the physical circumcision which is a seal of covenant that is limited only to the Jews.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: What is the benefit of physical cleansing of circumcision without the

circumcision of the heart?

MEMORY VERSE: Rom 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the

renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”.

STUDY 51 4TH SUNDAY IN ADVENT DECEMBER 18 2022

THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE.

SUB-THEME: The eternal reign with God-2

TOPIC: The expectation of Christians

TEXTS: 1Co 15:26,54-58

AIMS:

  1. to remind us as Christians that death has no power over us if we die in Christ and
  2. to study why Christians should look forward to the eternal reign with God instead of clinging to the splendors of this world.

INTRODUCTION

The strength of our Faith as Christians is measured by the level of our focus on eternal reign with God rather than temporal reign on earth. The more we focus on earthly merits and gains, the more we lose our focus on the heavenly crown which is eternal. Christians must develop and have a high hope of what the eternal reign with God will look like and always wish to be there.

STUDY GUIDE

  1. Reflect on our text today and analyze the hope of the Christians in life after death.
  2. Why should Christians look forward to the eternal reign with God instead of clinging to the passing splendors of this world? Critically discuss from the context of 1John 2:16-17 and Rev 21:1-4
  1. What is the expectation of Christians concerning eternity? 1Cor 15:54-58; Rev 7:14-17.
  2. Mention some of the reasons for losing faith by some Christians in the eternal reign with God. Matt 24;9-12; Rev 2:4 and what should be our stand as pilgrims of heaven? 1Cor 15:58; Rev 2:5.

CONCLUSION

No matter how our success and accumulation of wealth may be here on earth, it can never be compared with the heavenly bliss where there will be no more failure, no more victimization neither will there be any intimidation. It is a glorious expectation which we must always look forward to enjoy.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: No matter how glorious our temporary world; it can never be compared with the eternal bliss in heaven.

MEMORY VERSE: Rev 7:16-17 “They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; ;for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

INTRUDUCTION

We thank God for another Christmas. May God spare our lives to celebrate more on earth in Jesus’ name. Let us all take note that there is a difference between Christmas as the celebration of Christ’s first coming into the world and “Xmas” which is simply the removal of the name of Christ whose birthday is being celebrated.

“Bliss” simply means, “perfect happiness, great joy, a state of continuous gladness, a state of no regret, no failure, no sadness, no weeping, no intimidation and no fear of death”. This will be eternal state of all believers at the end of this wretched world, when judgment will have separated the wicked and unrighteous from the godly and righteous believers in Christ.

  1. What is the greatest distinction between earthly ruler and Christ our Lord who will reign eternally? Reflect on Psalm 72: 7
