Who is High Chief Dr (Mrs.) W. A. Awosika?

High Chief Dr (Mrs.) W A. Awosika is a native of Owo in Ondo State. She was born in February 13, 1940, into the Oshuporu Chieftaincy Family of Owo, Ondo State.

She was born to the Oshuporu chieftaincy family of Owo in 1940. The name of her parents are Late Julius Alade Osobia and Mrs Bolaji Arobo Oginni.

Her late father, Julius Alade Osabia, was the grandson of the Ojomo Agunloye of Owo. He was the Treasurer to the Native Authority Administration. He owned the then beautiful storey building in Owo, the only one with garden and full time Gardner in attendance making it worthy for the habitation of the “Whitemen”.

His house was, therefore rented for the use of the Cadbury and Round tree Cocoa Merchants in the 1940s.The father later became the interpreter to the “Oyinbos” in Ilaro, in what is now known as Ogun state, where he spent a considerable part of his life working.

About Chrisland University – All you Need to Know

Chrisland University was officially opened in 2015. It is located in Abeokuta, Ogun State. It has the total of 47 Facaulty and 610 students.

Chrisland University (CLU), the University arm of Chrisland Schools Limited actually began on September 17, 2015. Established by a seasoned educationist and administrator, High Chief Dr. (Mrs.) Winifred Awosika, OON, who has a vision of imparting the educational sector positively, the institution opened its doors with only seven students. High Chief Dr. (Mrs.) Winifred Awosika, OON had always nurtured the dreams of establishing new educational levels every ten years with a vision to be at the forefront of private education in Nigeria, and having a leadership position from kindergarten to tertiary level.

Her dreams were brought to life when she established the Nursery section which she started by educating not more than seven pupils in her own kitchen. She however got more pupils and there was a need for expansion. In another ten years, she established the Secondary School section, and the Pre-degree College after ten years, and these sections have grown into large citadel of learning. Chrisland Schools which was founded in 1977 remains the largest privately owned educational institution in Nigeria.



There was a slight delay as the University arm could not be established after the ten years just as the founder planned. But the dream came alive in 2015, and the University was granted full operational license to operate as a private university in Nigeria, in year 2019 by the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s National Universities Commission.

The University commenced with two Colleges- College of Arts, Management, and Social Sciences, and College of Natural and Applied Sciences. The College of Basic Medical Sciences became the third college in 2019, while College of Law is upcoming. The incumbent Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Mrs. Chinedum Peace Babalola, FAS, championed full accreditation of nine (9) programmes (Business Administration, Economics, Accounting, Criminology & Security Studies, Psychology, Computer Science, Political Science, Microbiology and Biochemistry) presented for the 2018 NUC Accreditation. Three programmes (Mass Communication, Banking and Finance, and International Relations) which were presented for NUC accreditation in 2021 got full accreditation also in 2021.

The first batch of seven students arrived in 2015 and their matriculation ceremony was presided over by the Chancellor/Founder, High Chief Dr. (Mrs.) Winifred Awosika, OON. By 2019, when it graduated the first set of Bachelor of Science degree holders in its own name, enrolment included students taking Accounting, Criminology and Security Studies, Psychology, and Computer Science. The maiden convocation ceremony took place on 1st November, 2019, and the former Governor of Anambra State and business magnate, Peter Obi was the Guest Speaker, while the eminent Professor, Prof. Peter Okebukola was the Convocation Lecturer. The occasion was chaired by Emeritus Professor Nimi Briggs. Miss. Lauretta Onemu from the Psychology Department emerged as the overall best graduating student with a CGPA of 5.00.

The second Convocation Ceremony on November 26, 2020 marked the 5th Anniversary of the Institution. The Guest Speaker who gave the convocation lecture, Her Excellency, Prof. Mrs. Sarah Anyang Agbor, the Commissioner for Human Resources, Science and Technology, African Union Commission, spoke extensively on a reflective perspective of leadership, sustainable growth, and national building in Africa. The former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was the Chairman of the ceremony. The University graduated 28 students during the second Convocation Ceremony as Miss. Folashade Kikelomo Mary from Biochemistry emerged the overall best graduating student with a CGPA of 4.80.



 

At the University’s 5th Matriculation Ceremony in 2020, no fewer than 148 students were sworn in by the management of Chrisland University at a virtual matriculation ceremony to kick-start the 2019/ 2020 academic session.

During the University’s 6th Matriculation Ceremony on 11th March, 2021, over three hundred students were matriculated for the 2020/2021 academic session. The students, who were sworn in on the university campus, were admitted into three colleges – College of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, and College of Arts, Social and Management Sciences.

The first and current incumbent Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University, Prof. Mrs. Chinedum Peace Babalola, FAS, is a Nigerian Professor of Pharmaceutical chemistry and Pharmacokinetics. She is the first female Professor of Pharmacy in the University of Ibadan, FAS, and FAAS and the second female Nigerian FAAS. She was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University in November, 2017. In 2016, Prof. Babalola was selected as one of 10 most influential female scientists in Nigeria. In March 2021, she was among the honorees on Leading Ladies Africa’s 100 Most Inspiring Women in Nigeria. Prof. Babalola won the African Union (AU) Kwame Nkrumah Prize for scientific excellence presented in February 2020, thus making her an AU laureate.

Being one of the private Universities in Nigeria, Chrisland University has continued to envision becoming a world class University, renowned for intellectual freedom, ethical standards, research, community service and the outstanding training of a new generation of leaders. Chrisland University now has Part-Time programmes which took off in 2021, including Certification and Diploma Programme in Criminology and Security Studies. In March 2021, Chrisland hosted World Poetry Day in courtesy of the Institution’s Acting Head of Department, English, Dr. James Akinola, with the theme, “Wreaths for a Wayfarer”. The event which was held virtually was in commemoration of the memory of the late Nigerian Professor, Pius Adesanmi who died on March 10, 2019 aboard the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 306 from Nairobi. In attendance were Prof. Chinedum Peace Babalola, Professor Toyin Falola and other distinguished writers.

The University’s science laboratories have state-of-the-art equipment that encourages research and all-round development among lecturers and students. Also, the Mass Communication studios (Radio Studio, Television Studio, and Photo Studio) are equipped with multi-million naira state-of-the-art standard facilities that can compete with any established university in Africa. The University also set up Chrisland Research and Innovation for staff and undergraduate “innovate Chrisland prize”.
