Chimaroke Nnamani, the senator representing Enugu East in the National Assembly, has accused Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, of setting the Igbo political trajectory back 24 years. Nnamani made this statement on his official Twitter handle on Monday, following his loss to Kelvin Chukwu, the Labour Party’s candidate, in his bid for re-election to the Senate. According to reports, Chukwu polled 69,136 votes to defeat Nnamani of the Peoples Democratic Party, who scored 48,701 votes. Nnamani, a former governor of Enugu State, had endorsed Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, who is now the president-elect, over the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar.
Despite being suspended by the PDP leadership for anti-party activities, Nnamani insisted that he was still a member of the party and took the PDP, National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu, and other party officials to court. However, Nnamani announced his exit from the PDP in a signed statement on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences with the party’s national leadership.
