The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Alex Otti of the Labour Party as the winner of the Abia State governorship election. The State returning officer, Professor Nnenna Oti, made the declaration at the INEC secretariat in Umuahia on Wednesday, four days after the election was held on March 18. According to INEC, Otti polled 175,467 votes to beat his closest challenger, Okey Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 88,529 votes. The state returning officer made the final declaration after collating the results of Obingwa Local Government, which had delayed the final announcement.
As of March 20, INEC had collated results from 16 out of the 17 local government areas of the state, apart from Obingwa. From the results collated by INEC, the LP has won in 10 LGAs which include Abia North, Abia South, Arochukwu, Bende, Ikwuano, Isuikwuato, Ohafia, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, and Umunneochi. The PDP candidate has won Isiala-Ngwa South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Ugwunagbo, and Isiala-Ngwa North, according to INEC. The YPP candidate, Eyinnaya Nwafor, has won only Osisoma LGA, where he comes from.
All the parties are now waiting for the result of Obingwa LGA, which has 157,390 registered voters, according to INEC data. Out of these, only 154,966 voters collected their Permanent Voters Cards for the 2023 election. About 27,000 of them were accredited on 18th march. On Sunday, INEC raised an alarm that hoodlums had attacked the collation centre in Obingwa, which was happening at the council secretariat. It was reported that some politicians were trying to manipulate the result for Obingwa, which could determine the winner of the governorship election.
To save the situation, INEC announced the suspension of the collation of the result for Abia state.Â
The commission, after receiving the results through the BVAS, concluded the process today being the 22nd day of March. As it stands now, the result has been announced and Otti Chioma Alex happens to have satisfied all requirements and has been announced the winner of Abia State gubernatorial election.Â

The Governor-elect has delivered his first acknowledgement speech, thanking the good people of Abia. He assured all that contested for the seat to execute the plans they all laid out for Abians. He thanked most especially the almighty God for making it possible at his own time.
